Humanitarian Highlight 07.30.26
As we go through our newsfeeds, our RSS feeds, our social media accounts, etc… to find the next batch of humanitarians to highlight we are not generally looking for a theme. This week we do have a theme, though. We have picked some of those scholarly good Samaritans helping students, teachers and athletes with their educational goals. Also we are now sharing some of the Facebook and Twitter humanitarians we find. Be sure to notify us if you want us to help get the word out on your next cause!
First Commerce Credit Union
First Commerce CU has awarded some lucky students funds they can use to help in furthering their education. They held their 2026 MyWay Scholarship and chose four lucky students in their community for the prize. They have been holding this for over a decade now and there seems to be no plans to stop. They look at academics and involvement to choose who gets the scholarship awards.
Gain Federal Credit Union
Another scholarship program was done by Gain FCU as they awarded 10 Burbank students with some funds for their education. Their scholarships come from different categories that look at local students and those who are also part of Gain’s Independent Advantage Program, that has been a program in the community since 1996. It is a program that ties into the Credit Union Movement‘s goal to help with financial education. The program teaches how to use credit responsibly, budgeting and balancing of a checkbook, and other such important financial education that every person needs.
Hawaii State Federal Credit Union
Education is a high priority for those in the credit union industry, which is why we so many offer scholarship programs, and Hawaii State FCU understands how important education is. This isn’t a scholarship for students, but a program to give grants for teachers to aid in purchasing the supplies, technology and resources they need to teach the young minds in their community. For 18 years this program has helped their community with their Investing in Education Grant Program, which is over 1100 grants and more than $532,000 invested in these teachers and schools.
Kauai Federal Credit Union
It is that time of year where a lot of the humanitarians we find in the credit union industry are helping students and schools, so let’s also honor Kauai FCU for their scholarship program that recently awarded 5 students with such awards. They looked at grades, and recommendations to pick the winners.
Great Basin Federal Credit Union
Let’s look at another charitable need that is not about scholarships, as we honor Great Basin FCU for their partnership to help Pack Provisions with feeding those in need. Granted, it is still on theme as the food pantry helps University Students. See, credit unions are getting all sides of school assistance. Pack Provisions is a great program that has long helped ensure that students are able to get the substance they need to succeed. This partnership will surely help the program since they receive 150 to 200 visits a week and that shows there are those who are in need of the services provided.
Compass Federal Credit Union
This week we have looked at the cost of education, the need of educators, and how some credit unions are helping young students get fed so we will shift focus to the youth doing sports. Compass FCU held a charity golf tournament and raised $10,000 to assist the Fulton Girls Lacrosse and Fulton Youth Hockey programs. This will help them get more than 120 new jerseys, the equipment they need for practice and games, as well as cover the costs to complete in a Modified level indoor lacrosse tournament, which they have not done in over a decade. The Youth Hockey team will be using their portion to maintain their ice arena and other needed equipment to play ice hockey. What a great event and they are looking forward to the 15th annual event next year!
