Humanitarian Highlight 07.16.26
It is Thursday, so it is time for another great round-up of humanitarians in the credit union industry. This week we have more scholarships, food banks, and even a large donation to the arts. No cause is too small or inconsequential as we see communities transformed and families assisted by the credit unions in their community. Every week we put these together and we know there are so many we don’t come across or get a chance to shout-out, because the credit union movement is full of true humanitarians.
REV Federal Credit Union
REV FCU has donated $100,000 to support a local arts landmark, the Thalian Hall renovation project donation was the largest corporate gift to aid the Performing Arts’ capital campaign. This contribution will be going towards naming rights of the ceiling mural inside the planned Wilde Cat Club, a unique music venue that will be built on the former City Hall side of Thalian Hall. It is reported that a local artist, Mark Weber, will be the artist creating the mural. The credit union noted that the donation is to support their focus on community development and long-term investment to the Wilmington area. This is not just about the arts or history, but it is about the community. As we write this, we also came across their recent Sour Mash golf tournament benefiting the United Way Alliance, and their hard work supporting the Downtown Business Alliance.
Y-12 Federal Credit Union
For almost two years the Transforming Western project has been planning and working on how to transform this historical and important part of their community. It is KCDC’s largest housing property as it holds 440 units. The very first section was 244 units built in 1939. The project was completed in 1952 after receiving around $4.5 million in federal funds and it housed 444 new dwellings in over 90 buildings. There has since been many removals, upgrades, and changes over the decades. There are some very important additions and upgrades being worked on right now that will see an overall redevelopment and upgrade to the the area until 2029 when it is planned to be completed and containing 479 total housing units. Money has come from many sources including a grant by Y-12 FCU.
Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union
As Delco Health Department puts out the announcement for a back-to-school drive you know Franklin Mint FCU will assist. This is their third annual Back-to-School Fair and it is to help the families of the community who need essentials for the upcoming school year. At the time of publication of this blog post the event is still ongoing and will be there at many locations in the community until August 7th, 2026. So many families do not have the funds or access to the simple things that will help their children succeed. Education truly is the silver bullet to a better future and a better community.
Alliance Catholic Credit Union
This summer there are new homes being built in Detroit as part of the Habitat for Humanity’s ‘Pope Leo Village’. There are 14 homes being built in the northwest Detroit in the Berg-Lahser neighborhood. There is an anonymous donor that wanted to honor the first American pope and so they gave a large donation to the cause. Alliance Catholic CU has a long history of donating to the Habitat for Humanity, including a $5,200 grant in May. They are still looking for volunteers, so if you are in the area and interested, let them know. Also, we see they have their third annual Alliance Catholic Foundation Clay Shoot Fundraiser in September, so check it out!
Redstone Federal Credit Union
The Delta Theta Lambda Education Foundation gave 32 students a boost in their educational assistance as they awarded almost $40k in scholarships. The awards were given at the foundation’s 2026 Scholarship Awards Presentation. These scholarships were a collection of funds from many organizations including Redstone FCU and so many others in their community that care about the future of these bright stars.
SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union
SchoolsFirst FCU is a wonderful credit union that serves the teachers in their community and to show their commitment to education they also seek to assist students. They awarded over $200,000 in college scholarships to 245 students with its 2026 Member Education Award scholarship program. This is the 26th year where they awarded such grants and they look at many factors including grade point average and leadership experience. We know many, if not most, credit unions have scholarship programs and we agree that these are so important for the lives of the student, their family, and their communities.
