Humanitarian Highlight 04.16.26

As the landscape begins to change with the arrival of spring, we find ourselves surrounded by new opportunities to support and uplift those in our communities. This season of renewal serves as a powerful reminder that small acts of generosity can take root and grow into lasting change for families and individuals in need. In this week’s roundup, we are Cultivating Kindness by highlighting several credit unions that have stepped up to provide essential resources, from healthcare funding to food security. Whether it is supporting local youth programs or assisting new parents with vital supplies, these stories showcase the profound impact of dedicated service. We invite you to read more about these inspiring initiatives and the incredible spirit of giving that continues to flourish across the country.

Freedom Credit Union

The children of Massachusetts are being assisted by Freedom CU as they are taking donations to help these kids battling cancer. They are taking donations that are going to Griffin’s Friends which has a long history of helping these children and their families. There are many things that these young patients need and so the money from these donations will help fund holiday parties, outings, crafts, and many other activities for the patients of Baystate Children’s Hospital and its Outpatient Oncology Clinic.

Canyon View Credit Union

Children are expensive, especially newborns and babies. This is why diaper donations are a godsend to new parents and Canyon Views CU is aware of this. They are once again participating in the annual 2News Diaper Drive this year to assist new mothers in their community. They are making their locations available for diaper drop offs. These are essential supplies and this contribution really assists parents trying to make ends meet.

Freedom First Federal Credit Union

Anyone who works with charities is aware of the Boys & Girls Club with their many locations across America and their mission to help these children. Freedom First FCU, no relation to the previous credit union, is helping the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia with their 2026 summer camp program. They recently hosted a drop-off location for the drive to collect food and necessary sundries to help this program.

Dover-Phila Federal Credit Union

To assist the community facing food insecurity we have Dover-Phila FCU working with the Tuscarawas Valley Farmers Market to expand their efforts. Dover-Phila FCU donated $20,000 to help their Donation Station program for the upcoming market season. This program connects local farmers and others to help provide produce to the community. Shoppers are able to donate funds or produce to the program.

State Employees’ Credit Union

The staff of the Nags Head branch of SECU donated $500 to the Outer Banks Dementia Friendly Coalition. This is after their “Winter Stew Wednesdays” they held during the winter months to bring food and cash donations to enjoy community and raise money for this charity. A charity that is responsible for education, support and other resources for people who are diagnosed with dementia and their caregivers, living in the Outer Banks. They use such donations to fund their caregiver education events, community outreach efforts, and initiatives to spread awareness.

Members First Credit Union

The Mid Michigan College nursing program was the recipient of a $75,000 donation from Members First CU. This will help support their health sciences education efforts. It was made through the college’s Rooted in Community, Growing for Tomorrow campaign. This is being directed toward the nursing lab on Mid’s Harrison Campus. The plan is to name the lab in honor of the credit union and to provide a fully-equipped lab to train hands-on and program development. This college is an important cornerstone of the community.
