Humanitarian Highlight 04.09.26
In the spirit of the season, it is inspiring to see so many credit unions springing into action to cultivate a lasting impact within their local communities. Every Thursday, we take a moment to step away from the technical side of the industry to focus on the heart of the cooperative movement through our Humanitarian Highlight series. This week is particularly vibrant, as we feature institutions partnering with the YMCA to support youth development and working alongside the Make-A-Wish Foundation to grant life-changing wishes. From doubling the impact of donations during the Big Day of Giving event to stocking the shelves of local food banks and mentoring a new generation of student leaders in schools, these credit unions are proving that true community growth starts with a dedicated commitment to service.
West-Aircomm Federal Credit Union
West-Aircomm FCU spent some time at the YMCA as they were were assisting local families. They have been working on their WAC Cares Spotlight initiative and this was just one part of that effort. Through its WAC Cares Spotlight Charity initiative, West-Aircomm Federal Credit Union proves that community impact is woven into its DNA. By combining hands-on employee volunteerism with branch-wide donation drives, the program provides a vital lifeline to local nonprofits and food banks. Whether they are serving meals at the YMCA or collecting essentials for neighbors in need, the WAC team consistently turns the ‘people helping people’ philosophy into tangible action. It’s a powerful example of how a financial institution can leverage its resources to foster a stronger, more resilient community for everyone.
Golden 1 Credit Union
Sacramento has long celebrated Big Day of Giving, and in a month of this post we will see #BDOG2026 which means the community credit unions will be showing how they are the true humanitarians. Golden 1 CU is no stranger to this day, and they have plans for 2026. When their members give on that day using their debit or credit card these will be matched up to $100,000. This also includes gifts done with their new payment methods, Apple Pay and Google Pay. More info!
Mutual Savings Credit Union
Make-A-Wish Alabama and Mutual Savings CU have kicked off their Make-A-Wish Monday. They are raising money to help the children who need their wishes granted. This program has long brought the hope and joy to those who need it most to fight their way through survival every day and are the youngest in their community going through these struggles.
Southwest Heritage Credit Union
In the past year we have seen a lot of food banks being assisted by humanitarians from credit unions. In Texas they have the West Texas Food Bank with drive-thru locations helping their community. Recently the Southwest Heritage CU team volunteered to staff these spots. They were there on the ground handing out food to those in need.
Credit Union of Georgia
The 25th Annual Teen Leadership Cherokee Class of 2026 came to a close and there were 20 high school sophomores to represent what is great about Cherokee County. The CU of Georgia was a proud sponsor of this event as these programs help shape the future of their community.
