Humanitarian Highlight 05.12.22

“Pay it forward” is a popular expression that encapsulates the credit union motto of people helping people by demonstrating that one good deed deserves another. In this week’s #HumanitarianHighlight, we are celebrating credit unions that are paying it forward in the community.

Northland Area Federal Credit Union

Northland Area Federal Credit Union helped sponsor this year’s community service project by Oscoda Girl Scout Troop No. 50414. The troop designed a gardening library and placed it on the lawn of the Oscoda Township Hall. The small library holds gardening books, seed packets, and bulbs for anyone to use. The library encourages community members to pay it forward by donating seeds and other gardening materials.

Navy Federal Credit Union

Navy Federal Credit Union is celebrating Military Appreciation Month by donating $20,000 to Operation Gratitude, a nonprofit that sends care packages and organizes volunteered events to honor service members. Navy Federal Credit Union will also be sharing appreciation messages on their social media using the hashtag #MissionMilitaryThanks the entire month of May.

Credit Union of America

Credit Union of America is paying it forward by pledging to donate $250,000 to Wichita State University. The funding will help support room upgrades, supplies, and support the Teacher Appreciation Program. In addition, the donation will provide scholarships for five students each year.

Mountain America Credit Union

Mountain America Credit Union teamed up with Idaho State Athletics to raise $5,000 for the Idaho Foodbank with their “Roar for More” food drive in April. The donation will provide 20,000 meals to people in Pocatello and other parts of Idaho.  Idaho State University athletes volunteered their time to help pack food after the presentation ceremony.

Cyprus Credit Union

Cyprus Credit Union has collaborated with KUTV, a television station in Salt Lake City, for the KUTV Diaper Drive. Members of the community are encouraged to donate diapers by dropping them off at any Cyprus Credit Union location. The drive lasted from May 2nd to the 8th.

Polish-American Federal Credit Union

Polish-American Federal Credit Union raised over $55,000 to help Ukrainian refugees migrating to Poland. Money will be donated directly to the Polish Red Cross to provide food, shelter, and medical aid. The funds were rapidly collected in a month period. In times of crises, it is good to know that credit unions are paying it forward to help those in need, and others are encouraged to participate in this great effort.
