Humanitarian Highlight 9.30.21
This week, our focus for #HumanitarianHighlight is on credit unions aiding recovery from disaster. One such disaster was Hurricane Ida and the devastation it unleashed in the southern and eastern United States. These credit unions are leading the way in aiding the recovery of our country.
In support for the devastated community of New Orleans, Gulf Winds credit union donated $15,000 worth of supplies to the New Orleans community and to their partners at OnPath Federal Credit Union. The donation included 12 generators, 90 gallons of fuel, and an abundance of tarps, water, nonperishable foods and other supplies.
The National Credit Union Foundation is responsible for millions in aid given by credit unions to emergency causes during the last few decades. The CUAid disaster relief program is an initiative by the NCUF to send out quick, emergency funding to communities in need following a major disaster. Recently, the NCUF announced that the Louisiana Credit Union League will receive an overall grant of $250,000 for Hurricane Ida relief.
Texas Dow Employees Credit Union recently participated in the JREID Indeed Donation Drive for Hurricane Ida Relief. The credit union donated $5,000 and helped volunteer with a donation drive to raise a total of $10,000 and two 18-wheelers worth of supplies.
Belco Community Credit Union announced that it would match up to $2,500 in donations to the American Red Cross, all for the intent of providing relief for the victims of Hurricane Ida. The promotion aims to raise as much money as possible for the charitable organization through the support of the community.
This credit union established a new type of charity account that will help raise funds for the American Red Cross, as well as a CUAid charity link. New Horizons Credit Union hopes to raise a significant amount of money for the relief effort to Hurricane Ida, and will also be offering personal donation boxes at their branch locations.
While not directly related to Hurricane Ida, the recent tragic flash floods in Tennessee have gripped the attention of several local credit unions. One such credit union is Ascend Federal Credit Union, which donated $20,000 to support flood relief efforts in the area. It is also offering assistance and donation links for interested members who want to help heal the community.
Through even the worst of circumstances, credit unions will always have the people of their community as the focus. Thanks in part to the efforts of credit unions such as these, recovery from these disasters is well underway. Please take the time to support organizations such as the Red Cross or CUAid if you want to do your part.
