Every credit union offers perks to its members. This usually starts at the very beginning with offers to deposit a certain amount of money to those who open an account, or other similar incentives. It can also be discounts to local events, contests, or in-house celebrations for members. This is all fun and exciting but as you know, there are more opportunities for members that go beyond giveaways and contests. Most branches look to educate the people they serve and it can go a long way on both ends. On one side, credit unions can provide opportunities to help out people who want information on specific topics like home or auto lending. On the other end, newly educated members are more comfortable to apply for a loan or use a credit union service that they may not have known much about in the past. This can be used as a major advantage for your credit union because the more they know, the more you grow.

Credit unions, as you know, were created to serve the underserved and people of a common community. From the creation of the first one and up until now, that idea still holds true. Over the years, more and more people have come together through the efforts of the credit union industry including the African-American community. Together, professionals and volunteers formed the African-American Credit Union Coalition in 1999 with the idea of sharing information and supporting programs that benefit all things associated with African-Americans in the credit union industry. With over 400 members and 150 affiliated credit unions, the AACUC holds an annual conference each year where training opportunities are offered, networking events take place, and individuals are recognized for their achievements in the industry. This year, the AACUC’s 20th Annual Conference took place in Atlanta, Georgia, and although Oak Tree was unable to attend this year, we got the insight details of the conference.

The youth represent the voice of a new generation and can give us a peak into what’s to come. Trends among young people help us understand what people like, and give us an understanding about what is important to them. When it comes to finances, developing a generation of financially literate people starts with early engagement. This means getting young people familiar with basic money management skills, and a general introduction into the world of finances. Most credit unions are already doing this with activities, events, and programs geared towards the youth that not only market their brand, but provide a valuable service to the community as well. Your credit union may be one of the ones already doing this, but there are always other ways and ideas to improve your methods. With that being said, we would like to share some of these ideas with you.

Summer is in full swing and people are taking advantage of the warm weather, beaches, and summertime activities. The National Credit Union Management Association is no exception, holding their 2018 NCUMA Summer Conference at the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort in the Bahamas. The five day event kicked off on Saturday, July 7, with a welcome reception and concluded the following Wednesday, the 11th, with two information sessions. Oak Tree was not able to attend this year, but it seemed to be filled with valuable insight from some of the industry’s finest. So, for those of you like us who were unable to make the trip to the Bahamas, here is a recap of what happened.
